I knew this one was gonna be good.
There’s just something about shooting a wedding for a pair of creatives that really gets me excited. Maybe it’s the different mindset, or the way they approach the day, or just the overall feel. I can’t put my finger on it but I know I love shooting weddings for creatives.
Helen and Matt are both full-time musicians. Helen Allen, or Helen Shanahan as she was known before she married Matt, is an accomplished indie/folk artist who plays regularly in the Perth festival and pub circuit. She already has two EPs and one 8-track album to her name since 2009.
Matt Allen has been in the live music scene for over a decade. He graduated from WAPPA in 2010 as the Most Outstanding Contemporary Music Student and went on to win various awards for his songwriting. He is now lecturing at WAAPA and leads the WAAPA Gospel Choir. I personally heard them sing at this wedding and it was nothing short of pure brilliance.
Matt and Helen met while studying music at WAAPA in 2010. Matt was a senior and Helen was a freshman so they didn’t really share any classes together, but when Helen did a gig at the WAAPA cafe one fateful arvo, what he heard stopped him in his tracks. They then became friends when they sung together in a friend’s performance. Soon Matt started to find any excuse to attend all her gigs and they went on their first date to watch Harry Potter at the movies. Helen was a massive Harry Potter fan, as you will see later in the pics, so Matt definitely chose the right movie for their first date. When they got engaged last year, Matt even made it a point to pop the question at Harry Potter World in Florida!
When I met them for the first time, I couldn’t believe Helen was a musician. Off-stage, her softly spoken and almost shy demeanor immediately puts everyone around her at ease, while Matt is super easy-going and fun to be around. I remember our meeting going way longer than usual and I felt so comfortable around them. They must have felt the same, coz soon after the meeting they booked me to shoot their wedding!
They chose to have their reception at Little Creatures Fremantle – so appropriate given that they spend much of their time performing in pubs – and Helen fully decked it out in a Harry Potter theme, right down to a handmade Golden Snitch for everyone that attended that night.
Here is Helen’s new EP Finding Gold, with the track of the same name.
