The pub was small by big city standards. Dark, slightly dingy, but it was the only pub in town.
And it was the one place everyone came together after work to trade stories.
She first noticed his cheeky smirk – one that made her do a second take.
He first noticed her exceptionally curly hair and the bright yellow dress she wore.
“I don’t have any cash on me,” he said, “But if I did I’d buy you a drink.”
She laughed, surprised at his frank honesty, and bought them both drinks instead.
This would be the start of a beautiful friendship that soon became something more.
Tom Price was the place where they met. Both were working with the big mining corporation Rio Tinto, and Tom Price was little more than a mining town. She never expected to find – amongst the red dirt, poisonous snakes, and rough miners – someone who would take her breath away like he did.
The wedding was stunning.
Held in York, one hour’s drive from Perth, they hired Faversham House for their venue and got Kristy from Flights of Fancy, Michael from Micktrics, and Kristy from Pretty Willow to help with the planning, decor and lighting. Touches of vintage were everywhere, and together with the beautiful 1840’s architecture of Faversham House, the look Veronica wanted for their big day came together perfectly.
Veronica wore a dress made by Elvi Design and together with a Juliet cap veil, she totally looked the part of a 1920’s bride.
Russell also eschewed the traditional black suit for a navy jacket and checkered shirt, tailored for a close-fitting Italian cut.
Veronica’s family hails from Papua New Guinea, while Russell is Australian through and through.
It was an amazing celebration, with both Russell and Veronica’s family and friends flying/driving into York for the weekend.
It always leaves me in awe that two people from two distinct cultures are able to find common ground and true love. And it’s weddings like these where I think, despite the stuff we read and hear about in the news about intolerance and ignorance, hatred and fear, that there is still hope in the world, as long as we have people like these two.
